Lee’s Learner Success Story

Meet Lee: a Secondary School Teaching Assistant who completed Aspire’s Level 2 Certificates in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges and Understanding Safeguarding and Prevent, as well as the Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs.

It’s never too late to learn something new, no matter what age you are. I would 110% recommend learning with Aspire; they’re helpful, supportive, encouraging and they are there for you throughout the course.
— Lee Pemberton

What did life look like for you before taking our course?

I was working as a Teaching Assistant at a secondary school. I had also been doing work with my stroke awareness and support network, SOS - Survivors of Stroke.

Why did you enrol onto Aspire’s courses?

After previously working in a school, I always felt that I could be better, so when I was given the opportunity to do the courses with Aspire, I jumped at the chance. By doing them, I was able to improve my career prospects and my knowledge of how to better support children and their families when working within an education setting.

What are your plans for the future?

Not long after finishing the course, I was able to gain a Teaching Assistant role at a local primary school, which starts in September 2024.

What was your favourite thing about the course?

I would probably have to say everything.

Tell us a bit more about it:

We learnt about the different disabilities that people can have and how we can best support them, such as using distraction methods, how to de-escalate confrontation, etc. The material that was taught was informative, detailed and interactive, which allowed for group discussions. Some of the assignments were fun and allowed you to be creative. The tutors were professional, fun and very encouraging towards learners. I want to say a huge thank you to Carys, Olivia, and Mary, who were my tutors throughout my courses. I'm honestly so grateful for the support you all provided.

What challenges did you face while doing our course and how did you overcome them?

Confidence was a big one for me, so, to combat this, I would push myself to speak on camera and participate during class/group discussions by sharing ideas, giving opinions, and sharing personal experiences.

How has this qualification changed your life?

It has given me the confidence and motivation to become a much better Teaching Assistant and a better person in general.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about starting one of our courses?

It's never too late to learn something new, no matter what age you are. I would 110% recommend learning with Aspire; they're helpful, supportive, encouraging and they are there for you throughout the course. Before starting the course, I had 0 confidence in myself and didn't think I'd pass, but in the end, I ended up passing both courses and that's all thanks to my tutors.

Most Inspirational Learner of the Year

Lee was the winner of our Most Inspirational Learner award in our debut Learner Award Ceremony this year.

He was celebrated for his determination, resilience, and willingness to ask for support when he needed it. He was also praised for being ‘an asset to the Level 3, Cohort 12 group’ and for using ‘his experience of having a stroke to help others that have experienced this, sharing his story with press and offering support to the wider community.’ Lee’s openness about his experiences helped other learners to understand more around men’s mental health. He was truly an inspiration to Cohort 12 and Aspire’s staff body.

How did you feel about winning a Learner Award?

It was definitely a surprise and completely unexpected, I'm honestly so thankful to receive such an honour.
